For New Mothers · Coming Soon
New Mom Small Group Therapy
Six weeks, six mothers, and a room where you can say the thing you have not said out loud. Online across Ontario, hoping to start in October 2026.
The details, plainly
- Six weekly sessions, 80 minutes each.
- Six mothers, each with a baby under twelve months. Pregnant women are welcome to inquire.
- $480 in total, covering all six sessions.
- Online, and you need to be physically in Ontario for each session. If everyone turns out to be local and wants to meet in person, we can talk about it.
- Hoping to start the first week of October 2026. It runs when six mothers who fit the group have joined.
Led by Leanne Wiese, Registered Psychotherapist (CRPO #15522), whose practice includes perinatal mental health. To register your interest, email leanne@kwtherapy.ca.
What this is
This is psychotherapy, provided in a small group by a Registered Psychotherapist. Each session opens with a short taught presentation, roughly 20 to 40 minutes, on one topic. That part is teaching. The facilitated discussion that follows is the therapy, and it is where most of the value sits.
It is not a class, a course or a workshop, and it is not a substitute for individual therapy if that is what you actually need.
What gets recorded, and what does not
Only the taught presentation is recorded, and only Leanne appears in it. No participant is visible or audible in any recording. The recording is shared with the six of you so you can rewatch it at 3am when you have forgotten every word.
The discussion is never recorded and never shared. Not with the group afterwards, not with anyone else.
Confidentiality, honestly
Leanne is bound by confidentiality and by the legal limits to it, and those get explained before the first session rather than discovered later. The other five members are not health professionals and are not bound by the same rules. We set a group agreement and hold people to it, but nobody can guarantee what another member will say outside the room. That is worth knowing before you decide how much to share, and it is a normal part of choosing group work.
The six weeks
The order is deliberate. The early weeks build enough safety to make the harder material survivable, the middle weeks go where it actually hurts, and the last week points forward rather than dropping you.
Week 1: Matrescence, and the version of you that arrived with the baby
Language for a change most people never name out loud: the developmental transition into motherhood, why it reorganises identity, and why nobody warned you.
Week 2: Reading your own weather
The difference between hard and clinical. Baby blues, perinatal depression and anxiety, what the actual markers are, and writing down what you would do if it tipped.
Week 3: Running on empty, and the anger nobody warned you about
What sleep deprivation does, what postpartum rage is telling you, and what genuinely protects your sleep rather than what the internet says about it.
Week 4: The things mothers do not say out loud
Intrusive thoughts and difficult births. The two things people are most afraid to say, and why they are common, studied, and not what you fear they mean.
Week 5: The other adults
Your partner, your mother, your in-laws, the division of labour, and the conversation you have been avoiding. You leave with one specific conversation prepared.
Week 6: Good enough, and what happens after this
Naming the standard you have been measuring yourself against, and writing down what you are doing next, with or without us.
Weeks 2 and 4 are the sensitive ones. Intrusive thoughts and birth trauma are handled as taught content first, so that everyone has the frame before anyone shares, and nobody is required to disclose anything. If something needs one-to-one attention rather than a group, we say so and help you get it.
Who it is for, and who it is not
It is for mothers in the first year who are functioning but flattened, isolated, angry, frightened by their own thoughts, or simply tired of pretending. You do not need a diagnosis and you do not need to be in crisis.
Before the group starts there is a fit conversation. That is not a formality: a group only works if the six people in it can hold each other, and part of the job is being honest when a group is the wrong container. If individual therapy would serve you better, we will say so.
If you need something sooner, or something different
This group starts in October and runs to a fixed schedule. That makes it the wrong answer if you need help now.
Right now, today. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department if there is immediate danger. You can call or text 9-8-8, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, at any time.
Urgent, in Waterloo Region. Here 24/7 is the regional crisis, intake and referral line: 1-844-437-3247, 24 hours a day.
A group is also not the right container for everything. If what you are carrying needs one-to-one attention, individual therapy is the better route, and the fit conversation will say so honestly rather than filling a seat. More local options are on our Waterloo Region resources page.
Cost
$480 in total, which covers all six 80-minute sessions. Before the group starts you get a written agreement setting out what the fee covers, how to pay, and how refunds work.
Group therapy is treated differently by different insurers, so if you plan to claim it, ask your provider about group psychotherapy delivered by a Registered Psychotherapist before you commit. We will confirm what we can put on your receipt.
How to register your interest
- Email leanne@kwtherapy.ca. Tell her roughly how old your baby is and what has been hardest lately. A couple of sentences is plenty.
- Leanne will arrange a short fit conversation, at no cost, to work out whether this group is right for you and whether you are right for it.
- If it is a fit, you get the written agreement, the consent forms and the start date. Nothing is owed until you have those.
